There has always been a need for schools to enforce standards for the way in which students dress. The students most often do not understand the reason why they are being dictated about appropriate clothing. What they do not realize is that our schools are given the task of preparing our children for their future as adults. • The Jocks.  Boys and girls the sports jackets, the bright white sneakers and smiles along with a perma all year round tan.  They will not believe that their parents looked and dressed exactly the same back in the 50′s and 60′s.

So embrace your fashion past, you may think they were faux pas back then but you were the inspiration for the next fasion generation!

As far as retail ready accessories, look for belts, scarves, pins and of course jewelry. Belts can do a lot for both fit and appearance. Wide belts work better for people with thicker waists as skinny belts can cause waistbands to roll. Many of today’s belts are finished with some sort of décor, whether it’s a faux finish of some type or jewels and studs. Scarves are very versatile. Use them around the neck as they were meant to be used, use them as a cute belt, or even wrap them around your hair for a throwback look. Pins can be used in a typical placement—somewhere near the bust line—or they could be used on the cuffs of jeans or the shoulders of blouses. Jewelry is fairly self-explanatory. Wear it small, wear it big, play and have fun.

Use fashion accessories to your advantage. With the addition of accessories, you could wear the same outfit two days in a row and no one would be the wiser. Whichever items you choose to play up your favorites duds, make sure you have a good time with it.

Keeping up with current fashion trends is about as easy as treading water during a tsunami. The styles are ever changing course and as quickly as one wave comes in, another rises over top. Sometimes it is best to stick to the tried and true styles that never seem to go out. Boot-cut jeans, fitted cotton tees and that little black dress never seem to lose the fashion war. There are ways to keep up with fashion trends without bowing down to the black hole of consumer spending though.

When a new “must-have” comes out, take a good look at it. Usually you will have an initial reaction; you love it, or you hate it. Try not to act on this though. Humans don’t take kindly to change and often something new will give them immediate thoughts of “NO WAY!”

When a new trend emerges, try it on. See if it fits your body. Try to imagine wearing the item to the office, out to supper with your significant other, or on a girls only weekend. Can you picture it? If so, can you picture wearing the item six months down the road? How about next year at this time? Could it be paired with any other items in your wardrobe? If you’ve answered no to these questions, put the item back. If you’ve answered yes to one or two and the piece is inexpensive compared to your budget, consider it a bit longer. If you’ve answered yes to all the questions, go ahead and buy it. It might just turn out to be a new classic! If it’s just not your thing, skip it and save your money for a cute pair of shoes or a new handbag.

When shopping for work wear, be sure to look for hand washable, no iron suit sets. You will usually find these as a 4 piece solid color set consisting of pants, a skirt, a jacket and a vest. Lay everything out the night before (just as you have your kids do). This will save you time on a hectic morning. Since you are using neutral base colors, you should have numerous colors of tops to fit your mood. Solid colored tops will present a dramatic look while prints and neutrals within the same color range as the suit will look more relaxed.

Who remembers the nationwide news story about a particular entertainment star’s dress during a court session? Whether you are going to school, court, work, a fancy restaurant or just a hometown baseball game, you need to be aware of your appearance.

Do:

• Make sure your bare essentials are covered up! You might not be a celebrity or politician, but who really needs a bad beach moment coming back on them later in life?
• Wear a business suit to a job interview unless you are 100% sure that the entire employed party wears jeans and flip-flops every day. Court dates call for business suits as well—at the very least a pair of dark slacks and a button down shirt.
• If the invitation calls for casual, jeans or a cute skirt with a cap sleeve top is perfectly appropriate. Hot pink mini with an armful of bangle bracelets and hoop earrings? Not so much…

Don’t:

• Wear something that you would be embarrassed to wear in front of your Dad.
• Ever wear a tight dress in white, beige, pale yellow, ivory, or any other color that you can easily see through when you hold it up to your bathroom light.
• Buy clothes that don’t fit. Quality control and size standards vary among companies. Buy an item according to the way it fits, not the number on the tag.

If you are really having trouble with your choice of attire, consult both a trusted friend and a trustworthy relative. Ask for honest suggestions and you might be pleasantly surprised by what you find out about your own style.

With the cost savings being what they are, there are plenty of businesses that are doing their best to attract customers. Madonna has done it again. With daughter Lourdes, she has launched a new clothing line “Material Girl.” Available at Macy’s, Material Girl aims for juniors and the tween fashion divas, ages 7-14.

Tight leggings, short shirts and fabrics of every color and print are the baseline for this style. Choosing a look that your kid adores and isn’t too revealing might be a challenge, but layering can keep the modesty in the style.

Scarves and jackets work with the layered look. Madonna said Lourdes was not just the inspiration for the clothing line, but actively works with the designs. Lourdes is blogging about the new clothing line herself.

Neither Madonna nor Lourdes will model the line. Leather and lace from the 80’s, along with high boots and heels compliment the look. Dressing like you didn’t plan it is Madonna’s goal for Material Girl outfits.

For those who well remember the 80’s, Material Girl clothes are more like Like A Virgin clothes. Lourdes is very interested in fashion and style, and has strong opinions about it. She Expresses Herself in her blogs.

Hip-hop clothing has been around for nearly 30 years. In the beginning, artists would select specific brands of clothing they liked and could constantly be seen in that same clothing. Schedule when to shop. Contact local stores and ask them when certain items go on sale during the week. The first person you contact at the store may not come out and tell you the information you need. Take some time and call different departments before going in person. One example is my local mall has many department stores that do true markdowns during the week. Target does markdowns on Tuesdays and larger stores like Macys and JC Penny all follow a schedule for marking down items. Many sales associates know the schedule and will freely share this information.

Sign up for your favorite retailers mailing list. Those that offer online shopping will send special discounts and coupon codes to entice customers to buy. These online stores often send unadvertised coupons to help move merchandise that is in stores. There are many unadvertised online deals that can be found by searching by the lowest price, or in the clearance section.

Shopping List

Create a list of the items you would like to buy, and the price range. This helps to quickly identify what items may be great choices to try on, and select something to purchase. If family members can not shop with you in person, bring their current measurements to the store. Use a tape measure to make sure the length and waistline will fit.

Preparing for special occasions can be stressful if you don’t already have something at home to wear. Here are three special occasion shopping tips for women.

Dress Size

There is no reason to be uncomfortable at a special occasion. Trying to squeeze into a dress or pant suit is not necessary. Always opt to purchase and wear the correct dress size. Shop for the size you are right now, not the one you hope to be on the date of the event.

Support Garments

Wear underwear the truly supports and uplifts your curves. Wear these support garments when shopping. This could be by wearing a sun dress with a supportive slip or a girdle. If your arms, back fat, or another body part makes it hard to find fitted clothing, search out clothes that compliment other areas. Saddlebags can be concealed for the day by wearing a girdle that does not roll up on the thighs when worn. The only way to test how support garments will work, is to wear them before the special event happens. Nothing is worse than wearing a girdle that rides up or other support garments that you can not breath in.

Outfits that are very low cut can be controlled with the help of using double stick tape. This tape can be found in the lingerie section of any major department store. A good application will help keep a dress or top in place while dancing at a wedding or speaking in the public spotlight.

Conservative vs Provocative

If you feel that none of the outfits are working out, take a deep breath. Dresses and blouses that taper or have a seam at the smallest part of your body is slimming. Choose a line skirts or wide leg pants to float over bumpy thighs or other problem areas. It is always better to go for the more conservative outfit that you feel most comfortable in. Offensives against the dress code can have disciplinary consequences.  Here are some ways to look fashionable with dress codes in school.

Creating more variety in your wardrobe starts with thinking outside of the box. Define first what you can wear. This may consist of a certain color or style.

Take time to push the limits with what you can wear, even though there is a dress code.
